The GirlEng Western Cape Information Session was held on the 4th of May at the University of Cape Town. The day was set to be a day of learning, fun and encouragement. Co-founder of SAWomEng, Naadiya Moosajee, kick-started the day by welcoming everyone, sharing some background on SAWomEng and telling her inspiring story about her various career ventures. It was great to also have the SAWomEng Creative Design Portfolio Director, Emily Schuiling at the event. Emily presented the field chemical engineering. Two SAICE (South African Institution of Engineering) members spoke about civil engineering and quizzed the learners on some Civil Engineering developments such as the Gautrain and the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

During intermission, the learners had the opportunity of asking questions at the discipline specific stands while enjoying their snacks. The UCT engineering student council attended and brought with them a fuel cell project. The learners were able to see how chemical energy can be transformed to electrical energy as the fuel cell powered a light display.

After being informed about the academic requirements for pursuing engineering at various universities in Cape Town, Mary Hilton (Communications & Marketing Manager at UCT) encouraged the learners to aim higher than the minimum requirements. Mary Hilton also gave a presentation displaying the success of previous UCT female engineering students. One of the success stories was of the mechanical engineering guest speaker, Amulet Matlala.

A big thank you to the GirlEng Western Cape team for organizing this event and to all of the guest speakers who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences with the learners. We hope that all of the students who attended feel enriched and have a clearer understanding of the world of engineering.
