Hema is a chemical engineer by profession, and a change-maker by passion! She is a serial social entrepreneur who over and above her “day-job” as a process engineer, co-founded WomEng, an international NPO developing the next generation of female engineering leaders. Following the success of WomEng, she has also recently co-founded WomHub an umbrella company to host various gender parity programs, including those of WomEng, with a number of other industry related programs. WomHub has rolled out programs across Africa and Latin America, with aggressive expansion across Asia to follow soon.
Hema has founded another venture - The Passionate Professional, a Leadership Incubator with a focus on incubating leaders through Mentorship. Hema has partnered with the IDM, a business school designed to help shape the next generation of African leaders, to found the School of Mentorship.
Hema holds a BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemical Engineering as well as an MSc degree in Engineering. She is a certified Ontological Coach receiving her diploma from the world renowned Newfield Network. Hema has a variety of experiences from ranging from technical engineering to NGO development, consulting and entrepreneurship. She has lived and worked abroad in Germany and has extensive international exposure and experience. She is a noted speaker and facilitator, having taken stages both locally and abroad.
Her passion for the work she does has resulted in a number of accolades in recognition of her leadership. These include being awarded the South Africa’s Most Influential Women in Engineering title by CEO, branded as a “Change-Maker” by Oprah Magazine, named as one of the Top 200 Young South African’s by Mail & Guardian and selected as one of 27 women around for the FORTUNE Global Women’s Exchange. She is a Vital Voices Global Leader; a member of the African Leadership Network, a community of dynamic and influential leaders in Africa and is part of their Vision Advisory Committee; and a member of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) committee for Women in Engineering. She has been named as a finalist for the CEO Most Influential Woman in Africa Awards and a finalist for the Trust Women Hero Award. She is also board member of the Mufaro Foundation. However it is not these accolades that define her, but rather the impact that she has through her work. Her personal mantra is: "Life is all about passion, about being a part of something bigger, but most of all about making a difference!”
