Excellent Turn Out at KZN Information Session!!

The KZN GirlEng team held an Engineering Information Session on the Saturday 16th April 2011 and what an amazing day it was! There was a turnout of 250 high school girls whom are definitely more excited about this great profession of engineering after the session. Included in these 250 girlsĀ  where 60 girls from the city of Pietermaritzburg and a further 15 girls from the Durban South Coast region. The GirlEng Team had a goal to reach as many girls as possible and it is clearly evident in the number of girls that showed interest and attended the session that this was achieved.

There were quest speakers from five engineering fields: Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, Chemical and Civil engineering and Quantity Surveying. The speakers where able to express their love and understanding of their own disciplines and certainly managed to entice a large number of girls. The girls were also able to have their questions about the disciplines answered and common myths dispelled. Stalls for the different engineering disciplines where also set up for the girls. This proved to be most successful, as all the stalls where buzzing with girls during the lunch break. The entry requirements for the University of KwaZulu Natal were explained to the girls to indicate the amount of work they need to do in order to qualify to study at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

A huge thank you to the dedicated KZN GirlEng mentors who did an excellent job in welcoming the girls and making them feel at ease. The KZN GirlEng team would also like to thank all personnel and private companies that made sponsorships towards the lunch packs, information packs and prizes. The UKZN Faculty of Engineering was also tremendously helpful with the Information Session as they sponsored printing and gifts for the girls. Of course a special thank you goes to all the Information Session attendees; without them the day would have not been successful.

The next event that will be held by the KZN GirlENg Team is in July; during this event 60 girls will be invited to join the GirlEng Team for a Weekend Camp. The camp will focus on a Technical Project and Mentorship. The Team has high hopes and looks forward to this event.
