GirlEng Gauteng Kick-off Workshop - All in a day's work!

by Hema Vallabh on Wednesday, Apr 14th, 2010

The long anticipated kick off workshop took place on the 27th March 2010 at SciBono Discovery Centre in Newtown. It was the first of its kind in terms of venue as we didn’t use the conventional university venue but a Science Centre that showcased great technical displays and models. These artefacts created an atmosphere which encouraged the young minds to be incubated scientifically and the engineering flame was clearly burning.

The Gauteng team was up early to prepare for the day and the spirits were sky-high. I think the pretty GirlEng golf shirts magnified the unity. Registration set-up, sound and lighting check, catering preparation and the only other component were our guests of honour – the delegates. Diverse beauty graced us as the delegates walked in with smiles, eager wondering eyes and expectant expressions.

Welcomes and introductions were done by the team and the SAWomEng body to give an overview of the history, achievements and future plans of the organisation- it was also a chance for the delegates to put faces to the voices they had been so accustomed to over the weeks during the build-up of the day. Presentations commenced with Juanene Frydman who talked about ‘Creating YOUR brand statement’ and she accompanied it with an activity which the delegates enjoyed. She was followed by Phelelia Sekele (BHP Billiton Career Centre Manager) who tackled entry requirements for universities and universities of technology and further looked into career opportunities specifically within engineering and built environment which was very comprehensive and informative. The event was also attended by SAWomEng Co-Founder Mabohlale Mampuru and GirlEng Director Hema Vallabh both of whom shared their enthusiasm and passion for GirlEng with the delegates throughout the day.

Tea breaks and lunch were carefully spaced out; they were much enjoyed by all. There was a world renowned mathematician who gave us all a confirmation that mathematics is truly the mother of all sciences. DVD’s from sponsors were played for the girls to familiarise themselves with their day to day business. Then it was time to showcase the brilliance of the delegates through the Technical Project, which was a series of built-in games from a construction site to picking an object using a crane (blind folded),and building up Africa the team also added a structural game where delegates had to build a tall and structurally sound straw tower. The efforts, frustration and arguments were priceless.

A sponsor’s game was introduced where questions about the DVD’s and presentations were asked in a game show style. The teams had to blow a party whistle to be noted, this was chaotic – but too much fun. Vote of thanks, prize giving and goody bags concluded this much enjoyed episode. The delegates were very driven and the engineering flame has certainly been ignited Best wishes to all delegates!
