International Engineering Fellowship Opportunity

South African Women in Engineering (SAWomEng) is showcasing an amazing opportunity to work abroad for a year as a fellow.  If you have a civil engineering degree, and would like to volunteer with an international organisation, then read below.

Building Tomorrow, Inc. (BT), an international social-profit organization empowering young people to raise funds and awareness for the benefit of educational infrastructure projects benefitting underserved children in sub-Saharan Africa invites interested individuals to apply for our civil/structural engineering fellow position.

General responsibilities of this 12-month commitment include:
• overseeing construction efforts at BT sites in Uganda
• implementing community construction training programs
• assisting in evaluation and solving of design and structural on-site challenges
• providing support as needed to BT’s in-country staff

Started in 2006, BT currently works with a growing network of over 25 collegiate chapters and hundreds of high schools to directly support the construction of new BT Academies throughout rural Uganda. Each BT Academy is constructed through the gift of a challenge grant by a donor community, and matched with 20,000 of donated labor by community members and parents of future students. To date, BT has built five Academies, providing safe classroom space for nearly 1,500 students.

The Civil/Structural Engineering Fellow will play a large role in successfully implementing the construction of BT Academies. Specific responsibilities include:  

• Approving future BT Academy building site designs
• Ensuring structural integrity as a top priority in the construction of BT Academies  
• Making weekly visits to all active construction sites and approving completion of contracted work
• Providing feedback to Building Tomorrow Uganda/USA on progress reached at BT Academy sites
• Other duties as assigned

COMPENSATION
This Fellowship is a volunteer position. BT will provide accommodations, international health insurance and allowances for all business-related expenses in Uganda including transportation. Travel to Uganda will be covered by BT.

All applicants must meet the following criteria:
-Willing to make a 12 month commitment (with possibility of renewal) to Building Tomorrow
-Hold at least an undergraduate degree in civil/structural engineering
-Ideally have experience working in a developing country
-Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Have experience using basic office software suites including PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
